It's Not Just About Getting Into College -- It's About Staying in College.
Heading to college is one of the biggest life transitions that a student will make in their life as a young adult. Yea knows that while there is not one common college experience, there are many questions, concerns, challenges, and experiences that are common to all students who are headed to college. Students can spend years preparing to apply for college, from building a robust portfolio of activities, awards, and service, to taking test prep courses and spending months choosing schools to apply to and crafting compelling essays. Unfortunately, many students don't have the opportunity to spend as much time preparing for the realities of college life as independent young adults, and that can have unfortunate consequences.
As a 2018 NYTimes article notes, an increasing number of college freshmen are leaving college after their first year because they are not prepared for college life:
"Thirty percent of freshmen won’t return for their sophomore year, and the wheels can start to fall off as early as Thanksgiving. We don’t talk about it much, but many teenagers go away to college only to recognize — either because of their grades, their habits, their mental health or all of the above — that they’re not ready for college life."
Yea has extensive experience working with students in the months before they head to college and during their freshman year to ensure that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to navigate the rigors, novelties, and opportunities of college life.
Aside from academic readiness, the 4 areas that are most important to a student's success in college are:
- Executive Functioning Skills (e.g. task and time management, organization)
- Life Skills (e.g. money management, laundry, self-advocacy)
- Health and Wellness (e.g. stress management, sleep, healthy eating, exercise, mental health support)
- Interpersonal Skills (e.g. setting boundaries with a roommate, communicating with professors)
Yea provides 1-on-1 coaching for students about what to expect during the first year of college and beyond.
